Don’t Just Tour the Building—Experience It
While you’re asking questions, pay attention to what you see and hear.
Do residents look engaged or isolated? Are staff members interacting with residents naturally? Does the community smell clean? Do people seem comfortable approaching staff? Is the environment calm and welcoming?
And if possible, visit more than once. A community can feel very different during a weekday afternoon than it does during an evening or weekend.
Most importantly, don’t feel pressured to make a decision during the tour. Take your notes, compare communities, and consider how well each one fits your loved one’s care needs, personality, preferences, and budget.
